Vanadium redox flow battery

The redox flow batteries appear as an appropriate method for safe local stationary storage of electric energy. The function of vanadium redox battery (VRB) is based on reversible oxidation and reduction of vanadium ions that occur in two different electrolytes separated by an ion-exchange membrane.

The main advantage of the VRB system is its independent scalability:

  • Variable capacity (tank volume, ion concentration)
  • Scalable power (number of cells, membrane surface)

The principle of the VRB is depicted on Figure 1.
